This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 22

Another TWiT in the can! This week, episode 22, your fine hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Roger Chang, Alex Lindsay, and John C. Dvorak, recorded live at Noonan’s Bar and Grill in Larkspur Landing, California. Hope the drinks were on the house! Of course the guys start out by chatting up Apple’s announcements last week, the iPod Nano, the Motorola ROKR, Quicktime 7, and more, including the fact that the ROKR’s DRM seems to have been hacked already, the crew ponder if we’ll ever see a video iPod, then move on to discuss the seven different flavors of Windows Vista that we’ll see when it’s finally released (boy, that’ll be fun), and not to mention the fact that for hi-definition protected content, Windows Vista will force you to buy a new monitor. Yes, you heard me right. I’ll wait for the hack on that one. Next, the gang chat up IPTV and bittorrent, a new security flaw in Firefox, and much much more-no sense in me giving away the whole show when you can download the podcast and listen to it! Check it out:

Our esteemed hosts this week are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Robert Heron, David Prager, and John C. Dvorak, as usual. Special guests this week are Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, Arlo Rose of Konfabulator, Alex Lindsay from the Pixel Corps, Applescript product manager Sal Soghoian. Definitely a good time!

This week’s topics include more patent problems for Apple, Apple’s big announcement on Wednesday the 7th which looks like it’ll be an iTunes phone, Creative’s problems staying afloat, Google’s boycotting CNet, Free Linspire, Apple kills the Mac Mini test drive program in one day, Hurricane Katrina relief, chat about Konfabulator, hopefully a new Systm [ http://www.systm.org/ ] coming soon, creating RSS feeds, and much much more!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 20

20 episodes of This Week in Tech already? No way! The show’s been running strong at the top of the podcast charts lately and looks to continue its trend, all things considered. This week is no exception. Our hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Robert Heron, David Prager, and Steve Gibson; this week’s topics include new fangled LCD displays that use LEDs as light sources, LED pocket projectors, talk of one of my favorite sites ever, Lifehacker [ http://www.lifehacker.com/ ], discussion on Google Talk (of course), the lovliness that is the Logitech G5 laser mouse, security in Windows Vista, an upcoming Halo movie, and much much more!

The TechTVForever.net mirror is up and running and ready for download, so you’ve got no excuse to not pick it up. Download it now!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 19

Another TWIT is here and ready to go! This week’s hosts are the usual gang, Leo, Pat, Kevin, Roger, Steve, and Dvorak; no special guests this time around. Topics this week of course include the triumphant return of Call for Help to the G4 lineup, but of course go much deeper and into other areas than that: The trademarking of Linux, Google’s market moves, how the FCC defines broadband and why it’s lame, the lack of faith in Verizon FIOS, a little chat about Creative Commons, a good long talk about IPTV and it’s direction in the United States, and much much more. Looks like an excellent podcast! The TechTV Forever mirror is up and running, so download away.

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 18

This week’s TWiT looks good, very good! Our fine hosts this run around are of course Leo and Patrick, Dvorak, Steve Gibson, Robert Heron, David Prager, and of course Roger Chang. I tend to like the TWiTs with more people, adds some life to the podcast. This week is the first in what will hopefully be a regular trend; having special guests on the show, including Bob Young, former CEO of Red Hat, founder of Lulu.com, Mike Lazazzera (also known as The Man Lazazz over at Command-N) of Call For Help. Definitely looks like fun!

I’ve heard more than a few people bemoaning the presence of John C Dvorak on the podcasts, pining for the days when he couldn’t get a stable voice connection to everyone else so they didn’t have to listen to him. The fact that the first “topic” in the episode notes for this week is “Dvorak and Gibson nearly come to blows over HTML email” isn’t really exciting in that regard. I can’t imagine anyone arguing FOR HTML email, but maybe Dvorak is that guy. Or maybe it’s Gibson. Who knows, I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but I’ll get back to you.

Also on topic this week are issues like the hacking of OS X to make it run on any PC, AOL giving away the loot of a spammer who settled a legal battle with them out to their users, Apple’s woes patenting the iPod interface, what happened to DiggNation (you’ll have to listen to both podcasts to find out!), more updates on the new live TWiT recordings, and much much more! Enjoy!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 17

Another TWiT, ready to go – this week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Roger Chang, Robert Heron, Steve Gibson, and John C. Dvorak. Whew! There’s a lot of TWiTs on this week’s show, but it’s not confusing-I actually like the episodes where there are plenty of people chatting about a whole variety of topics. This week Leo reveals unintentionally when talking about laptops and gaming that he plays World of Warcraft [ http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/ ] (what server, Leo?), everyone comments on Apple’s big announcement this past week-what else? The release of the Mighty Mouse, details of the TechTV meetup in Toronto on August 11, suggestions on a new cellphone, Kevin sharing my love for Dell LCD displays, and a whole messload of listener submitted questions! Definitely a good TWiT if I do say so myself.

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 16

Another TWiT in the can and ready to roll! This week’s guests are Leo, Pat, Steve Gibson, back again for another session, and John C. Dvorak. Topics covered this week are events at Defcon 13 (for those not in the know, the hacker convention in Las Vegas), the new record for an unamplified WiFi link (125 miles), the evil that is the Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act, and glory that is the Community Broadband Act of 2005 (write your government officials, kids!), the wonder of Etymotics earbuds (even if they aren’t white), the important question of who the most powerful tech journalist in the world is (Dvorak doesn’t care because it’s not him, that’s all), upcoming news on TWiT live shows, and much much more!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 15

A couple of days late, but no worse for the wear. This week’s TWIT looks better than ever, and it looks like a long one at that! This week the founder and CEO of Opera [http://www.opera.com/ ] Jon van Tetzner stops in for a chat, and Steve Gibson from GRC [ http://grc.com/ ] comes by to talk as well!

The usual suspects are in the house too, talking about all sorts of tech news and issues this week from Google’s financial explosion to Microsoft’s modest earnings, Motorola’s pending iTunes telephone, PayPal hacks, the school in Richmond, Virginia selling iBooks at 50 bucks a pop, the silliness of the name Microsoft Windows Vista, and much much more! This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 14

Another fresh podcast to begin the week, the TWIT guys have episode 14 up and ready to go! This might be the beginning of a trend, hopefully, of getting the podcasts up and ready first thing Monday mornings again. Okay okay, I’m kidding-I’m not nearly as miffed as some of the folks who were riled up when the casts came out a day or two late, but I’m still glad to wake up on Monday morning and have a fresh TWIT to start this Monday morning with!

This week’s topics include John C. Dvorak’s pundilicious return to the TWIT cast (which is a mixed blessing depending on how you feel about Dvorak), Google hacks, Google Earth hacks, all the things we love about Google, IBM finally giving up the ghost on OS/2, Microsoft’s newest mistake in Longhorn-I mean their new monitor-based DRM, and the lack of Space Shuttle launch last week, and much much more! And besides, if Dvorak is in the mix, then you know there’ll be lots of talking. Enjoy!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 13

Another TWiT is up and ready for download! If I’m not mistaken, Leo is still out this week and Patrick has it all taken care of, and it looks like another good TWiT for everyone to listen to! This week’s topics include discussion on whether or not BitTorrent really counts as mainstream, the shuttle launch tomorrow, thoughts on the new Willy Wonka movie, cooling and quieting your PC, the upcoming DefCon, giving up the land line, and much much more! Check it out!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 12

Looks like Pat managed to get the most recent TWiT up! A welcome respite from other events in the news today, I can say that with complete confidence. And no sooner than the new TWiT is up than we have our mirror up and running as well! Not that you really need it anymore, now with their partnership with AOL Radio, you can direct download the torrent if you dig bittorrent, or you can direct download the mp3 from them at pretty good download speeds! I gave it a shot to get the copy you’re about to get, and I was impressed. So now you have even more options, and options are a wonderful thing!

Anyway, this week’s topics include HDTV envy, some awesome free backup software (and we all know everyone needs to back up their files, right?), and more! On with the downloads!

You know what to do! This week’s topics include Jessica Corbin’s new endeavor, Fempire, which looks absolutely hot, Chris Pirillo’s exploits at Gnomedex and whose logo he has on his chest now, new battery technology and the possibility of fuel cells in your next laptop, and the DMCA’s spread north of the American border, under the guise of C-60, Canada’s new anti-piracy law. There’s more, too, so go right ahead and download it!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 10

Hot on the heels of episode 9, This Week In Tech Episode 10 is delivered as promised, and much to the delight of people like me who love to have the podcasts to listen to at work or on the go. Leo must have really burned the midnight oil this time to edit two TWITs in a row and release them like this, and boy is the TWIT website getting absolutely hammered. Good thing you have us, isn’t it?

This week’s topics include PSP tricks, Google taking on eBay, a serious security breach for MasterCard holders, and of course, answered calls! Check out the full topic list (if you can make it through to the site) here:

Anyway, download it right now-don’t bother with the torrents right now, they’re fast, but good luck getting through to the site to grab one of the mirrors; thats’ why we have it right here. Enjoy!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 9

The long lamented Episode 9 of This Week In Tech (TWIT) is finally here! Through hard drive crashes, FTP server deaths, and all sorts of technical difficulties, Leo finally managed to finish editing and putting together the most recent episode of TWIT and bring it to us today; not to mention the fact that he promises that TWIT Episode 10 will be out in the next 24 hours! Yikes!

Well, I’m not complaining; this is something that the TWIT folks are doing for free and because they love it, and, like most things that people do for a loving community, when it’s not done perfectly or on time all the time people start to get angry about it (like when webcomic authors don’t update on time all the time-it’s really odd watching a community of people reading something for free that everyone does-and reads-because they just enjoy it get angry at someone for not giving them their free fix on time) and demand things like updates if it’s going to be late and whatnot. I mean, sure I miss it if it’s not on time, but I suppose my “just deal with it” level is higher than other peoples’. Regardless, I’m ranting, and that’s not what you’re here for, you’re here for the link, and here it is!

This week’s topics include Windows updates, the possible leakage of OS X for Intel systems, the end of DVD Decrypter, Knoppix and other Live CD Distros, and a ton more! Check out the entire topic list here:

Download away, and enjoy! We’ll have Episode 10 up as soon as Leo releases it. Here you go:

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 8a

Well well, what do we have here? Looks like a mid-week TWIT, starring Leo and Patrick! I think this one was spawned from the need to comment on the announcement that Apple is going with Intel processors for it’s Macintosh line of desktops and laptops, and sure enough that’s one of the foremost topics.

Leo says over at the TWIT website:
that they recorded this next door to the site where the Apple World Wide Developer’s Conference was going on, and specifically so they could get some information on the developer reaction to the announcement, as well as discuss with the creators of iPodderX what they think of the new iTunes moving in on their territory by allowing users to manage podcasts from within iTunes; one of the more ignored announcements that came out of the WWDC keynote speech, completely overshadowed by the MacIntel announcement.

Well, go grab the torrent if you like, but if you don’t like, you can snag it right here:

Hot off the presses, TWIT Episode 8 is up and ready for download here at TechTV Forever!

I admit, I had my doubts that they’d manage to get this one up so quickly after the last one, but they came through with no problem, and now that Leo’s put it up, we’ve got it and you can get it. This week’s topics include the proposed .xxx top-level domain for adult websites, Apple’s groundbreaking announcement that it’ll be shifting it’s systems to Intel chips, WiMax, and more!

Patrick Norton Explains This Week’s TWIT Delay

Patrick to the rescue! Patrick Norton has posted on the TWIT collaborative blog as to why the TWIT podcast for this week is running so late and what the story is; namely that Leo has been travelling and when your recorder and editor is on the go and away from home, you don’t have much in the way of backup, at least not yet. But it looks like they’re working on that! Read all the details here:

Leo posted a followup shortly thereafter with a bit more information, the poor guy scrambling to edit the audio as quickly as possible. Personally I just suspected that they would go ahead and call it a week and release a new on on Sunday and apologize for missing a week just to get back on track, but it looks like they’re a little more devoted than I am a slacker! Leo has more info, too:

But don’t you worry, as soon as it’s available, we’ll have it up here as well. Cheers!

TWIT Episode 7 Delayed

As you may have noticed, the most recent TWIT isn’t up yet. Well, that’s because it hasn’t been released yet! So if you come here to get your TWIT fix for the week, just hold on tight-it’ll be up as soon as we can download it from Leo, and Leo says he was going to have it sometime yesterday, so that means we should be expecting it any moment now! So just hold on tight and you’ll have it soon!

I know, I know, waiting sucks, but it’ll be worth it. I’m looking forward to it myself. You can count on us having it up as soon as possible after it’s released!
