This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 35

Another TWIT is in the can! This week is a special week, because the TWITs have guest host on board Steve Wozniak, of Apple fame! Your regular hosts are Leo Laporte, John C. Dvorak, Kevin Rose, and Steve Gibson. The addition of Woz to this week’s cast makes for some hilarity, including Woz talking about how awesome his Prius is, and the pending Mac Mania IV cruise that he and Leo will be on in February, right after which Woz will be playing Segway Polo in the championships. The crew share much love for Protopage [ http://www.protopage.com/ ], and discuss why on earth the music industry would be going after websites that publish lyrics of artists’ songs, and how everyone’s new webmail betas rock really hard. All this and much much more on this week’s This Week In Tech! Enjoy!

Podcasting is the “word of the year,” and Google releases a transit planner that only Patrick (and I) think is worthwhile. This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 33

Another TWIT is in the can! This week’s TWIT features brand new swanky microphones and hosts Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Robert Heron, Alex Lindsay, and John C. Dvorak. This week the TWITs chat about the veracity of wikipedia and what that might mean for wikipedia in the long run, but does it really matter? Also, music piracy defendants fighting back against the RIAA, hijacking podcasts, and Universal apparently believes it’s illegal to email their employees (yeah, right). Skype does video, Microsoft releases a lightweight photo editing and sharing application that looks like what a lot of people think Windows Vista will look like, and Walt Mossberg goes batty over the new Apple iMacs with the built in iSight. Also, all signs point to Apple releasing intel boxes in January-the question is now just which systems will get the overhaul first. Will RIM have to kill the BlackBerry, and other mysteries like where Apple’s TiVO killer Mac Mini is. New Orleans will get free wi-fi when there are enough people in the city to use it, China is proposing it’s own DVD format, and the US Air Force is trying to invent a phaser. Sound tasty? The TechTVForever.net mirror is up, download the show now!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 32

This week’s This Week In Tech is hosted by Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Steve Gibson, Alex Lindsay, and John C. Dvorak, which shows us we’re getting back to normal. The crew is chatting via Skype, all from their various home bases around the country. Complaints of the new XBox 360 overheating are showing up here and there, but Dvorak says it’s all baloney. The crew discuss the story we mentioned last week about web browser makers agreeing to security standards and trusted certificates, and Microsoft taking yet another loss on each XBox 360 sold, trying to make up for it in game licensing and volume sales. Firefox 1.5 is due any day now, so get ready for the marketing, and of course the story everyone’s been mentioning-Apple being among the top 10 music retailers in the world. Kazaa is down the tubes, TiVO stikes a deal that will allow you to watch video on your iPod and your PSP, and CBS is in talks with Yahoo! and Google to get their video archives on the web also. According to Dvorak, IPTV is big everywhere but the United States-wonder why? All this and much more on this week’s TWIT!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 31

A brand new TWIT this week, but featuring a skeleton crew since everyone is all over the place this week. Tune in for this episode and you can expect to hear Leo Laporte, Steve Gibson, and John C. Dvorak only, discussing this week’s technology news and information, ripe with commentary. The trio discuss where everyone else is briefly and what they’re up to, and then dive right into the details, like who had the best booth at the Podcast Expo last week, and they give the aware to iLounge. We get Dvorak’s take on the whole Sony rootkit DRM nightmare, and thw crew discuss it a bit more, including the question on everyone’s minds-why didn’t anti-spyware and anti-virus companies and publishers protect us against things like this? Also, the group discuss Microsoft’s staged shortages of XBox 360s in stores around the country to try and limit supply while stoking demand for this week’s Tuesday launch, and why it might just blow up in their faces. They discuss ways of presenting information visually, and Leo explains why he loves KeyNote so much. They talk about Google Base and wonder exactly what it’s supposed to do (but whatever it is, the press says it’s revolutionary!) ICANN retains control over internet addressing, and possible Intel portables in January? We’ll see!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 30

And the thirtieth TWIT is in the can! A whole thirty episodes, and no more fitting tribute for the thirtiest episode of a podcast that really put podcasts on the map than to record this week’s TWIT live at the Podcast Expo [ http://podcastexpo.com/ ]! This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Steve Gibson, Doug Kaye, and Alex Lindsay, with special guests Don Katz, CEO Audible.com and other podcasters in the biz. TWIT officially gets the “People’s Choice Podcast” award, and wins an awesome microphone for it, and the crew talk up podcasts for a good length of the show, what kinds of podcasts there are and how broad an audience podcasting really appeals to. The crew update us on the Sony rootkit scandal, Yahoo and TiVO’s new deal, and chat about voiceovers, voiceover work, and El Edwards, the famous voice of AOL’s “You’ve got mail!” and “Goodbye,” about his most marketable asset-his voice! [ http://www.makinwavs.com/ ] The video is out at the same time, and links are available in the show notes. For those of you just looking for the audio, the TechTVForever mirror is up and running. Enjoy!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 29

This week’s TWIT discusses the topic that everyone’s been talking about lately, Sony using rootkit technology to impliment DRM with it’s copy protected CDs. This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Roger Chang, David Prager, and Alex Lindsay, and they launch right into the discussion by accusing Sony of putting rootkits on your PC in order to “protect” their copyrighted content. Also, is Microsoft making moves against Google by announcing Microsoft Office Live and Windows Live? The new Yahoo Maps is finally online, and they’re pretty good. Again-another company definitely taking aim at Google. Congressional hearings over the broadcast flag, and the congresspeople who are trying to limit your rights, and Sprint’s new pricey music service. All this and more on this week’s This Week in Tech!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 28

It’s been 28 episodes of TWIT already? Amazing. TWIT videos are being distributed via BitTorrent links in the show notes, see the link below. This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Robert Heron, Roger Chang, David Prager, a fine group indeed, and they’ve gathered to discuss this week’s topics: Digg.com’s new venture capital (nearly 3 million dollars!), Comedy Central’s ventures into IPTV, the death of privacy online, Bill Gates claiming not to fear Google (yeah, right), the new Open Office, the move that all US Passports will be using RFID by next year, IMDB’s 15th birthday, Martin Sargent’s pending podcast (we’ll stay on top of that for you guys!), and much much more! Head on over and download the show now!

It’s also worth mentioning that while I was kind of down on last week’s show, this isn’t to say I didn’t like it-I thought it was really entertaining and educational, and as you can tell I make use of Creative Commons licensing quite frequently. The show was definitely stimulating and interesting, no doubt about that-just not what I’m used to. I guess that’s what I should have said! Anyway-try this week’s TWIT on for size!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 27

After a one week hiatus (if you didn’t notice, there was no TWIT last week) another TWIT is in the can! This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, and Alex Lindsay, with special guest Lawrence Lessig [ http://lessig.org/blog ] of Creative Commons [ http://creativecommons.org/ ]! This week’s video is already up and available via bittorrent, as you’ll see at the episode notes page. Sadly, I have to admit that this week’s TWIT isn’t really the format that I would have liked; I prefer the larger panel discussions and the traipsing from topic to topic that lends itself to massive show notes and a great deal of information, but this week’s seemed to be a bit more slow and dull, although the subject matter was very interesting. I like departures like this, delving deeply into important topics (and Creative Commons is very important!) but at the same time it was missing the vividity and life of the previous TWIT podcasts. Oh well, can’t hit them all out of the park, or please everyone for that matter-I’m sure lots of people loved this week’s!

Regardless, the chief topic of discussion this week is property rights. No show notes since well..that’s pretty much all that was discussed. Check it out!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 26

Another TWIT is in the can! This week the TWIT crew land again in the Gallery Cafe for the last meetup TWIT for at least another week, as everyone goes back to their regular lives. Again the video is recorded thanks to Pixel Corps [ http://pixelcorps.com/ ], and should be available over at Revision3 [ http://revision3.com/ ] in a couple of days. Your esteemed hosts this week are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, Robert Heron, Roger Chang, David Prager, with no out of the box guests this week. You know what that means: more of the tech chat that you’ve come to know and love all the while!

This week the gang chat about what it’s like to fly with the Blue Angels, the DARPA grand challenge and robotics in automobiles, the Web 2.0 conference, and Apple’s pending october 12th announcement that everyone’s convinced will be a video iPod (although there is some dissention in the TWIT ranks!), the Sun + Google office suite story that broke last week, and of course, Dvorak’s tips for impressing everyone at a party. Sounds like it’s entertaining AND educational! The TechTVForever mirror is up, so download away from either our link here or the sources in the episode notes!

Videotapes again thanks to Alex and the PixelCorps [ http://pixelcorps.com/ ] and we should see the video out sometime this week! This week’s TWIT has everything you’re used to and more, including Dvorak heralding the end of Microsoft, everyone suggesting we all upgrade to Firefox 1.0.7 to fix security holes and bugs, Opera going free, free, free, archived video of the original, and we mean the original Ultimate Gaming Machine built by Leo and Kate way back in the ZDTV days, a virtual plague sweeping through World of Warcraft, the battle between Steve Jobs, music industry execs who are greedy for more cash, and pirates who just want tunes, how much we love MythTV, the geekiness that is the MoleSkine notebook, and much much more! Another TWIT in the can! This week’s show is again recorded at Noonan’s Bar and Grill in Larkspur Landing, California, and your gracious hosts are Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Alex Lindsay, David Prager, Robert Heron, and Doug Kaye of IT Conversations (the podcast) fame. This week’s show revealed the introduction of the TWIT pocket protector, and a pretty packed house at Noonan’s! Apparently the video was recorded thanks to Alex Lindsay and the Pixel Corps [ http://pixelcorps.com/ ] which means expect a video to be posted over at Revision3 in the following days.
