This Week in Tech [TWiT] // Episode 62

twit logo

Another TWiT is in the can! This week’s, episode 62, Leo Laporte, David Prager, Robert Heron, and John C. Dvorak all gather around the table to talk about this week’s tech news and other assorted hilarity; all the goodness you’ve come to expect from a good TWiT discussion.

Amont the topics this week are the fact that television had the lowest ratings in recorded history this week, and that simultaneously Nielsen announced that 6.6% of the U.S. adult population has recently downloaded a podcast and that podcasts are more popular than blogs. Also, The Sci-Fi Channel puts a pilot of one of their new shows online before they air it, trying to drum up anticipation, the death of the author of The Anarchist’s Cookbook, where to buy analog phones, a hacker who only tried to crack a database is jailed for 5 years, exploding dell laptops, Intel’s new kick-ass chips, Wired Magazine and Wired News come back under the same roof, the coolest 9 links on the web according to Yahoo!, and much much more!

Another TWiT is in the can!

Because we’re launching a DiggNation mirror as well as a TWiT mirror, we’re going back in the archives to toss out some of the old mirrored podcasts; we’ll only keep about 10 episodes of each at a time; so if you’re going back in the archives to find those old episodes, click the episode notes and download from there. We’ll list the AOL radio link as well as the TechTV Forever mirror! Here here for more downloads!

TWiT Special // IPac Update

twit logo

Leo sits down again with Jake Fischer, executive director of IPac [ http://ipaction.org/ ] to bring us up to date on what the geek lobby has been up to recently, including fighting against legislation in congress that will make life harder for anyone who loves their digital devices, including the Intellectual Property Protection Act, also known as the DMCA II, and the launch of FireHatch.com [ http://firehatch.com/ ] designed to help unseat Orrin Hatch, the Utah Republican who once said that he would be all for letting the music industry blow up people’s computers if they downloaded copyrighted material (and was then found violating copyright on his own website), the Perform Act, the Induce Act, and much much more.

If you’re concerned about digital freedom and your rights as a customer of some of these industries that are aggressively lobbying to restrict your rights and freedoms, you should definitely check this out, and get involved!

This Week in Tech [TWiT] // Episode 50

twit logo

Wow! TWiT is 50 episodes strong! It’s been a long time since the old Screen Savers gang gathered around a microphone to chat about tech news and how great it was to get back together, and here they are, 50 episodes later, still talking tech and bringing tech news and commentary to the masses. Congratulations guys! You’re definitely the podcast that defined the entire genre!

This week on TWiT, a small crew for such a big episode, including Leo Laporte, Roger Chang, Wil Harris, and John C. Dvorak. Among the topics covered are the death of the net neutrality bill thanks to congressional republicans, Ubisoft drops Starforce copy-protection from its games, Blizzard gets out the banhammer and bans over 5400 people from World of Warcraft, new surveys show exactly who’s listening to podcasts, will BootCamp start a massive exodus to Windows, Aero (the new graphics engine in Windows Vista) will be unavailable in pirated versions of the OS, and much much more!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 49a

twit logo

A mini TWIT pops up this week to get people introduced to one of my favorite political action committees. The fact is that geeks like you and I don’t really have much of a voice in government, while the voices of intellectual property owners, organizations like the RIAA and the MPAA, and other large interest groups can whisper and the legislature jumps in response. Get involved! In addition to one of our favorite groups, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, [ http://eff.org/ ] Leo introduces us this week to IPac [ http://ipaction.org/ ] , and talks with Ren Bucholz, one of IPac’s founders and board members, and Jake Fischer, Executive Director. Ipac’s website says the following:

IPac is a nonpartisan group dedicated to preserving individual freedom through balanced intellectual property policy.

We believe that technological innovation and individual creativity are vital to the future of this country. We believe that a prosperous and democratic society depends on freedom for all individuals to pursue scientific invention and artistic expression. Unfortunately, new intellectual property laws threaten to stifle these freedoms and restrict public participation in science, art, and political discourse.

Snag the most recent version from the TechTVForever.net mirror (linked below) and let us know what you think! Head on over to the ipac website and sign on to their statement of principles! Ipac, in case you might remember, is where the “your senator needs an iPod” campaign started; the folks that managed to get Ted Stevens of Alasaka, a known enemy of individual rights and freedoms (among other things) an iPod that he loved so much that he was astounded that the music industry was trying to make it illegal for him to use it! If iPac can change Stevens’ mind, think about what it can do with your help!

It’s that time of the week, which means there’s a brand spanking new TWIT to open the week with! This week’s TWIT is a little short sadly enough, but they hit on some pretty big topics! This week’s hosts are Robert Scoble, Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Molly Wood, and John C. Dvorak. (who must be gloating something fierce right now)

This week’s discussion topics include of course, Bill Gates’ odd choices of public appearances, whether or not anyone’s really listening to podcasts, Microsoft’s attempts at IPTV via Channel 9 and Channel 10, (we’ve mentioned them before) Disney’s cell service for kids, and more! This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 48

twit logo

This week on TWIT, your esteemed hosts will be…well…just Leo. But he’s got four of the original Apple employees on the line to chat about Apple’s 30th anniversary, including Bill Fernandez, Andy Hertzfeld, Daniel Kottke, Randy Wigginton, and Steve Wozniak, And that’s right, the episode is all about Apple’s 30th birthday. Now I’m as much of an Apple fanatic as the next person, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not so sure that this was a great TWIT idea; maybe it should have been a MacBreak special, since that’s the community it’s geared at, but all in all, I still think it was a good show. I did miss the perspective of the other TWITs though. Love it or hate it, it’s here and ready for your download!
