PC World’s Top 100 Products of 2005

PC World lists off their top 100 products of 2005, and some of my faves are right up there, including Mozilla Firefox being the number one. I can drink to that! GMail is number two (keep it up!) and Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger,” rounds out the top three. Now there’s a lineup I can agree with! The entire list is packed with awesome products and groundbreaking technologies that, while they may not be the absolute best at what they did, they may be the most popular, or they may have led the way for following technologies to come along and do as well or better than they did.

It may be a little bit early to conclude this list, and here’s to hoping there are still great developments in technology between now and the end of the year, but this is no list to be scoffed at, it’s pretty comprehensive and addresses new technologies like Pre-N wifi, the first affordable household-priced laser printers, advances in desktop searching, and more!

Cool Download: Startup Inspector

For the windows users in the crowd, it’s important to keep track of what programs are starting up and eating up all of your previous system resources every time you turn your computer on. Lots of unwanted programs like spyware and malware and even some completely benign but memory eating applications flag themselves to load when your computer boots up and windows starts, to make sure they’re available in the background and running at all times. This is great for spyware that wants to keep an eye on what you’re doing, but it’s also good for programs like the one that keeps an eye on the battery life of your wireless keyboard as well, and both of them might have pretty cryptic process names that’ll make them impossible to find. That’s where Startup Inspector comes in.

While msconfig.exe helps you a great deal and is accessable on any Windows 9x/ME/XP system, the interface leaves a bit to be desired, you have processes that don’t seem to link back to actual programs (so you have no idea what disabling something really does), and it’s completely missing for the poor windows 2000 folks still out there. (and I know you’re out there!) Courtesy of Lifehacker.com, our Cool Download was featured as their download of the day, Startup Inspector is a must-have tool for rooting out the cause of startup slowness and getting a handle on spyware that boots when your computer does.

Essential Firefox Extensions

Lifehack.org has published a list of their essential firefox extensions. Some of my favorites are naturally missing, but that’s okay with me-there are a lot of excellent suggestions here, and there are links under the list to favorite extension lists around the web. I really like this list; there are a few here that I have and a few here I’m dying to try. You might want to give it a whirl; you might find an extension you never knew you needed!

Firefox 1.5 Beta Released!

If you have to be on the bleeding edge of technology (like I do) then this download is for you. Keep in mind that Firefox alphas and betas are completely without end-user support, so you’ll have to do some digging to find out solutions to problems if you have them, or just go back to the last standard release, which in this case would be 1.06. Anyway, it looks like the beta’s finally made it out in the open, and after downloading it myself, I can tell you it’s a serious speed improvement, especially on Mac OS X. May not beat Safari quite yet, especially on systems with less RAM than they should have, but it’s definitely much much better and i enjoy it.

Anyway, you can download the new beta here:

And read PCWorld’s announcement here, which covers a points I missed, namely about enhanced security, functionality, and what’s on the horizon for the Mozilla Foundation (namely Firefox 2.0!). Read all about it:

Nifty Utilities to Hack Mac OS X “Tiger!”

Extremetech to the rescue! For all the folks who recently bought Macs or just upgraded to Mac OS 10.4, “Tiger,” there are a ton of awesome tools and utilities that’ll let you get under the hood and change the settings in a way that System Preferences never let you do! A lot of these techniques are simply commands that can be issued at the command line in Terminal, if you swing that way, but these tools bundle them up into a neat little GUI that will give you all the pleasure of changing your system settings by clicking checkboxes and moving sliders, if you don’t really dig typing in commands.

Definitely worth a try; the article is a bit lengthy, but it’s only to show you what’s possible with all of the various utilities listed in the article, and the best part is that they’re all free! If you’re a Mac user, this is a must-read:

Cool Download: X-Setup Pro 7.0

If you’re like me at all, you want complete and total control over your operating system, and you want it now. Tools that allow you to tweak the look and feel of the OS and even get under the hood a bit are essential on my systems, and X-Setup Pro, suggested to the TechTVForever Yahoogroup [ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/techtv-forever/ ] by member Sanman294 [ blog: http://sanman294.blogspot.com/ ], is a definite winner. Check out the text in the PC World software library describing the program:

Tweak more than 1500 functions in Windows, Internet Explorer, and other common programs with simple button clicks. X-Setup allows you to change the appearance of your desktop or browser, modify memory settings, or bump your security up a notch.

The Explorer-like interface makes navigating the tweak options a snap. Optional Record Mode and log files make it easy to retrace your steps and even reproduce your work on thousands of computers. You can view the source code of every plug-in before installing it, or you can set X-Setup to automatically update with new plug-ins.

Thanks Sanman294! Download the program here:

Firefox 1.5 Beta Available Soon

A new Firefox beta is coming soon, as reported in PCWorld:

and listed on the Mozilla Developer News blog:

it looks like the new beta version (and keep in mind that this is a BETA version, meaning there’s no official support, and it should be only used by developers or other people who can submit feedback to the Mozilla group on real bugs and issues, not “omgthiswebsitedontwork!!!11one”) will be available before the end of the week. Increased Mac OS X supporrt, along with speed increases, and improved popup blocking are among the features expected in this new version. Keep an eye out if you need to be on the bleeding edge of the browser wars, but the layperson can take this as news that we’ll probably never see a Firefox 1.1, and will likely instead see the direct jump to 1.5 in October.

Google Releases Google Talk

Again, another validation of rumors that have been running around for quite some time now-Google is getting into the instant messaging business. The word was of course that Google was planning an IM network, and it looks like that network is finally here, in the form of Google Talk:

Looks like Google Talk is riding on top of a Jabber network, so you can either download the Google Talk client (windows 2000/xp only at the moment) or you can use your favorite IM client to connect to the Google Talk network via Jabber. The only trick you miss there is the ability to do voice calls to other Google Talk users. That’s right, Google Talk includes the ability to place voice calls to other online members over their network, and while there is no Macintosh or Linux Google Talk client available from Google, they encourage you to use another one:

more information available here:

And are nice enough to include information! Google Talk works using your GMail username and password, and is available for download now. Give it a try!

Martin Sargent’s New Blog!

Only four entries over there right now, but it’s definitely looking good. Martin’s new blog, Sargeworld [ http://sargeworld.com/ ], is up and running and its few entries are pretty long and quite amusing. If you haven’t checked it out, you definitely need to. Link’s added on the right, head on over and bookmark it. Here’s to hoping Martin finds some work soon, or hey-maybe Unscrewed will be the next show G4 realizes they should never have canned. Never know!

Wiping Apple Off The Map

An update to that tidbit yesterday; noticed on the first day of its launch, Microsoft Virtual Earth was noted strangely to not have Apple’s headquarters on the map at its Cupertino, California address. Astute observers noticed the on Google Earth, Apple’s headquarters, in all its overhead glory, was seated firmly where it should be, but on Virtual Earth there was nothing but a warehouse and an empty dirt lot.

I know, I know, Microsoft didn’t do anything insidious and remove Apple headquarters, they’re just using old satellite photos. Very, very old satellite photos. So old in fact that the World Trade Center is still standing in New York City, for example. But regardless, Wired News picked up on the story today and actually managed to get hold of a Microsoft spokesperson, who gave the predictably amusing reply:

MSN Virtual Earth Deletes Apple HQ

So, if you didn’t notice, MSN unveiled Virtual Earth [ http://virtualearth.msn.com/ ], yet another step behind Google Maps-which has been all the rage for a while now-(it’s only a matter of time before they copycat again with some virtual earth globe thingy which emulates Google Earth) and Microsoft has made their first blunder…or offensive stab. Look up the address for Apple Headquarters, better known as 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, and on Google Earth you get this [ http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=37.332307,-122.030103&spn=0.005924,0.010131&t=k&hl=en ] and on MSN Virtual Earth you get this [ http://virtualearth.msn.com/default.aspx?ss=apple&cp=37.333411|-122.029708&style=h&lvl=17&v=1 ].

Aside from the quality of the two images being vastly different, and in my opinion Google’s being far superior(when’s that satellite footage from, Microsoft? 1972?), there’s one thing missing from the MSN Virtual Earth image. Apple Headquarters is missing. Yup, completely gone, not there, poof, kaput. But-we know it’s there, so where is it? Who knows, I’m waiting to hear what the PR folks at Microsoft manage to cook up to cover their butts this time, but whatever it is it’ll probably be a doozy.

The Guardian broke the hilarity-I mean the story, so check out their take:

TWiT Soundboard

Were you wondering where Leo got those Dvorak sounds for the TWiT episode where Dvorak wasn’t there? So was I! And now I know:

UPDATE: // This link is dead. Try this one! [ http://techtainment.net/images/twitsb.swf ]

The TWiT Soundboard! Amazing quotes from Dvorak like “Nah,” and “Ah..uhm…I don’t remember all the details,” and other tidbits like Patrick saying “Someone is breathing really heavily..it’s kinda hot,” and “Eat rocket, weasel!” Not to mention some of Leo’s best quotes, like “G4 eats it’s young” and “I go to Canada to steal my music,” all of which are totally out of context, naturally. But hey, it’s fun!

Check it out, a lot of em got laughs out of me!

Cool Download: RipEditBurn

Finally-an application that’ll help me with my CD and vinyl archive project. RipEditBurn is an application that essentially replaces a handful of audio burning and editing applications; it’ll rip any kind of CD (including copy protected ones, so use it for backups only, please), edit the music you got, convert the file types, re burn it to something else, and still offers a variety of features that the advanced and savvy user would appreciate, but equally offers enough of the basics that any potential ripper and burner might find useful.

With any luck, the application could become your one stop shop for all of your ripping, archiving, and burning needs when it comes to audio. Give it a go!

Gadget fans rejoice! The Gadgets and Gizmos site, for the G4TechTV Canada show, “Gadgets and Gizmos” is live, up, and running, and shelling out information to you gadget freaks and geek gear fans. Sadly, it’s still only available in Canada, but at least those of us elsewhere in the world can enjoy the website for the time being, and draw up whatever information we can absorb from it. And hey-maybe eventually we’ll see it on TV here in the United States!

In the meantime, head over to the new site and poke around-I’m sure there’s tons to see!

Google Feature Logs Users’ Histories

Oh Google, you so crazy! First it was a ton of extra space for GMail users, then it was Google Video, which started out as just a method to search the closed-captioning of television shows and is now accepting uploads from you, me, everyone else who might be interested in archiving their video with Google: [ http://video.google.com/ ] and more importantly WHY they want your video and how to get it to them: [ https://upload.video.google.com/ ]. Now, they’ve globalized your login and password that you use for GMail and renamed it your “Google Login,” which will act as your global authentication for all Google services.

Cool huh? Yeah-it wasn’t cool when Microsoft did it with Passport, but that was more because they tried to shove it down your throat for all MSN services and then some, and people tended to shy away from it. We’ll see if Google has better luck-I can see uses for a global Google login (customized deal searches across trusted sites on Froogle, for example) but getting back to point. The first step in Google’s mind, to making everyone log in to Google before using Google services is to allow you the opportunity to search your search history. Here’s the scenario: You Googled for some search terms that led you to a page a couple of days ago. You read it, used the info from it, and closed it. A couple of days later, someone asks you about the same thing-you’ve forgotten the web address so you can’t give the page to them. What do you do? Google again? But you forgot the exact search terms you used! Oh no! Well, Google comes to the rescue. If you logged in prior to making the search, you can look back through your search history (instead of having to dig through your browser history) to find that search and the page that resulted from it. Sounds cool, right? I think so. Read all about it:

Easy Ways to Recycle Old PCs and Cell Phones–Really!

The folks at PCWorld never fail to dissapoint, and this time is no exception. Ever wonder what to do with that old monitor you’re replacing, or that old computer that’s up and died, and you’ve long since picked up a new one to replace it? What about that laptop that they say will take a ton of money to repair since it’s not under warranty anymore? Or maybe just an old cellphone that you got a replacement for last week? Well, don’t just chuck it in the trash! That’s not very green-minded of you, is it?

Read on about the ways you can recycle or get rid of that offending technology that’s taking up space in your home and making themselves rather annoying paperwieghts while simultaneously helping the planet! Everything from finding a recycling center to donating your cellphones to donating them to FreeCycling them (meaning put it up on a list where anyone who wants it might make arrangements to snag it from you) are on the list of things to think of. So while there’s a multitude of options for you, the article does a pretty good job of condensing them down and giving you links to the ones you might be interested in. Check it out:

A couple of suggestions though-before you go getting rid of that old computer, check and see if your local school or school district could use a donation. And before you toss that old cellphone in the trash, ask your phone carrier to see if they take them back to recycle them, or even better-some carriers take them and reprogram them so they’re 911-only devices to be given to battered women and women in abusive relationships, so they have a direct line to the authorities. Now that’s recycling-saving the earth, and saving people at the same time. Keep it in mind next time you’ve got some tech to trash!

Revenge of The Screen Savers!

Check it! Patrick Norton, Leo Laporte, and all the tech news and content you’ve come to know and love, all wrapped up in one neat little podcast. What’s it called?

Revenge of The Screen Savers!

Check it out and download the first episode here:

Excellent title selection, if I do say so myself. Looks like it’s a weekly podcast to be distributed every sunday, and with any luck we should see appearances and contributed content from a variety of our old TechTV friends like Kevin Rose and Laura Burstein! If you haven’t played with podcasting, now’s the time to do it, or just download the mp3s and play them with any normal mp3 player. We’ll get to downloading and maybe create an archive of them, to hopefully save Leo a little bandwidth here and there. More on that coming soon!

Gadgets and Gizmos Site and Episodes Coming Soon!

Word around the message boards and mailing lists is that the new G4 TechTV Canada show, Gadgets and Gizmos, has put the stake in the ground and claimed their webspace at:

There’s nothing there save a placeholder right now, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as the new site comes online and what kind of content it’ll include. Here’s to hoping the new show and the new site is something like the Fresh Gear we came to know and love, but with the same flair that’s making Call For Help 2.0 such a wild success!

Also coming down the pipe is word that some new episodes of GnG are being shot as we speak, and hopefully they’ll be on the air soon, so stay tuned for more information about that too!

GMail Users, Rejoice!

If you catch it in time, check out the GMail login page:

It looks like they’re turning 1 today, and as a reward, there are a few new features for everyone! First of all, everyone’s getting an extra gig of space! That’s right, now you’re up to 2GB! But wait-if you log in, you’ll see you definitely have more than 1GB, but less than 2GB. Why? Check out the login page-they’re increasing everyone’s space gradually and you can see how much space each person is getting as it increases on the front page! Watch those megabytes climb!

The best part is that it’s accurate, and here’s to hoping its not an April Fool’s joke!

The second new feature is rich-text formatting in GMail messages! For those of you who like being able to personalize your messages with color, fonts, large or small text, and all that jazz, you can finally do it and send it away with all your happy customizations! Give it a try. Can’t say I will, I’m a plain text kinda guy, but hey-I know a lot of people out there aren’t, so this is a good thing!

You can check out all of GMail’s recent improvements and more that’s on the horizon over here:
