DiggNation // Episode 10

10 episodes under the belt for DiggNation and it’s still looking good. Weekly beer reviews and a wrapup of the tech news, what more could you ask for? This week the video is already up and ready to go, so head over and download whichever version you like! This week’s conversation topics are the CNN weatherman who completely lost his cool on-air (which I’m sure everyone’s seen the video of by now), a study that claims (as if we didn’t know) that sex makes people healthy, the introduction and immediate cancellation of the Try a Mac Mini for 30 Days promo, Mazda ditching cylinder locks in favor of USB, and much much more.

This week’s show looks like it’s a doozy, the stories are pretty interesting. As usual you can be a part of the discussion over at Digg.com, [ http://www.digg.com/ ] and you can head right over and download the show right now!

Security Now! //Episode 3

The next Security Now! is up and looks like it has been for a while-you’ll have to excuse my lack of regular posts, collecting information on relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina has taken up a great deal of time! Regardless, even though we’re back to a regular schedule with regular information, please don’t forget about the victims of Hurricane Katrina-they still need our help, and we still have to lend a hand. Even as we’re beginning to get back to our normal lives, those of us who are able to, that is, we should still remember those who have no lives to get back to. Keep your hearts open.

Okay-back to point: in this week’s Security Now! Leo and Steve debate the effectiveness and the pros and cons of getting a NAT (network address translation) enabled router, and how a NAT router protects you, and what steps you should take to make sure that you’re actually getting protection from your NAT router, and additional steps your can take to protect yourself. Definitely a ton of good information for this week, head over and check it out:

Doing Our Part: Helping the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

The members of TechTV Forever, LongLiveTechTV (and 535 York, LLTTV’s podcast, available at longlivetechtv.com), and all of us here at TechTV Forever.net would like to take a moment to reach out to the entire community to do whatever they can to help the victims of hurricane Katrina, to help those people whose lives have been forever changed by this enormous tragedy slowly begin to put their lives back together.

There are several things that all of us can do to help, even in some of the smallest ways, where anyone, regardless of your location, income level, or position in life, can do something to make a difference. First of all, the American Red Cross [ http://www.redcross.org/ ] is taking donations, both monetary and of course, in blood. Please please please give blood. Blood supplies are constantly running low, and thie event will only strain or deplete additional supplies. Regardless of your blood type, please contact the Red Cross to see where and when you can give blood or make a donation. Remember, each donation of blood can save up to three lives. Look at it that way. A few minutes of being mildly uncomfortable and a free cookie, and you’re helping 3 people get their lives back.

Also: for a wider array of ways you can help victims in the many states devastated by the hurricane, head over to the US Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website [ http://www.fema.gov/ ] to see ways the various states have set up ways to help out. They have also presented a list of excellent charities and organizations collecting donations of money, clothing, and non-perishable food for delivery to the storm-torn areas and their phone numbers:

Last but not least, whatever religion you practice, or spirituality you have, I suggest praying or meditating or whatever you may do, send positive thoughts, energy, even hope to the victims and the people working hard around the clock to repair the damage and save lives. If any new information comes up and we can find new and better ways to continue to help in the face of this tragedy, we’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, one of the members of the LongLiveTechTV group condensed a lot of this information here:

UPDATE // Two sites, NetworkForGood [ http://www.networkforgood.org/topics/animal_environ/hurricanes/ ] has compiled an incredible list of charities and donation links that anyone looking to help might find more than useful. Head on over there and help out as soon as you can!

MSNBC will be hosting a telethon this weekend to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina! Read more here:

UPDATE //
The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance has compiled a list of important tips for anyone who has donated or is planning to donate to a charity committed to helping the victims of Katrina slowly rebuild their lives. Remember to protect yourself when giving, and to make sure that the most of your donation goes to the people who need it the most.

Additionally, if you are looking for a loved one, CNN is posting a “Safe list” of people who have been found and are out of harm’s way here:

If you’re unsure that your donation is needed, or want to see the devastation firsthand, check out the following link, which includes sattelite photos of the affected areas in a before/after fashion. The damage is incredible and the need for assistance enormous:

UPDATE //
The political activism group MoveOn.org is hosting a website where people can donate spare rooms or beds to people in need of a place to stay. Visit Hurricanehousing.org to sign up, and refugees from the devastated areas will be able to search the database when they have internet access or speak with someone who does, and they will be able to find a place within reasonable distance to stay. Please, sign up and offer a spare room if you can-homes especially within 300 miles of New Orleans are especially needed.

Andy Walker Leaves Call for Help!

Andy! Say it isn’t so! Leaving CfH? It can’t be!

We’re all sad to see Andy go, but never fear, he has a ton of projects up his sleeve, like Ping! [ http://ping.cyberwalker.com ] and Lab Rats [ http://labrats.cyberwalker.com/ ] which we’ll definitely continue to keep track of! But still, with CfH’s arrival in the United States, it sure is going to be sad to see Andy leave our television screens so soon after he arrived (for those in the US, anyway)! Regardless, all of us here at TechTVForever wish Andy the best of luck in all of his new pursuits, and hopefully we’ll have him back soon to discuss his future plans and ambitions!

DiggNation // Episode 9

Also ready for you fresh on Monday morning is a brand new DiggNation! As usual, Alex and Kevin take on the most dugg stories during the past week at Digg.com, which this week are the release of Google Talk, AOL getting in trouble for making it way too hard for its customers to cancel service, prank calling Geek Squad (Best Buy’s on-site tech support folks), the top 15 tech shows, and much much more. Looks like DiggNation is going to a thursday release schedule, probably to offset the flood of Sunday night podcasts. Video link isn’t up yet, but the podcast is ready and waiting!

Security Now! // Episode 2

Security Now! runs on a Thursday schedule, so they’ll be announced a bit earlier. As usual, Leo and Steve Gibson are the hosts, and this week they’re discussing Microsoft’s Strider HoneyMonkey project, which appears to have some success, but Microsoft has so far refused discussing it with other security firms or with the public. The two of them discuss the pros, cons, and ethical concerns of withholding potentially valuable security information in order to fluff up a company’s bottom line. Enjoy!

N.Y. Attorney General Prods AOL on Cancellation Policies

Everyone knows how horrifically difficult it is to cancel your subscription once you’ve signed on with AOL; in fact to the point that many people just don’t bother, or set aside time in their schedules for the repetative “no, I want to cancel” they have to keep saying to the AOL rep on the phone when they call to cancel. It’s pretty sad, in my opinion, but it was a fact of life if you were an AOL subscriber, and it’s a testiment to how badly AOL is doing in the face of other ISPs offering similar or better services for less money, and in the face of ever father-reaching broadband internet access.

Even so, Eliot Spitzer, the Attorney General for New York (bless that man) put his nose into the fray after recieving over 300 complaints from AOL users mad that they were getting the short end when they tried to cancel, or their cancellation requests were outright denied. Spitzer, the friend of the consumer that he is, prodded AOL about their customer retention practices, and out of it comes a settlement where AOL promises to go easier on customers who want to cancel their service. Wonderful news. Read all about it:

Google’s Latest Is All Talk

Now I’ll preface this with the fact that I haven’t tried Google Talk. I realize it’s just another Jabber client, and I can connect to it using any Jabber-capable client, but the Mac in the office can’t use the voice-calling features that I think are cool (actually, the only version available is the Windows 2000/XP version, Mac and Linux users are waved to their favorite Jabber-capable client) and at home I can’t think of many reasons to use it over my trusty IM client.

This is the problem though inherent with Google Talk. There’s no one on it, and no real compelling reason to switch to it aside from the fact that it’s cool and it’s Google, but that’s not really enough, and since I don’t know anyone on it, I’m probably not going to switch until there are people I know. Granted it takes time, but it looks like there isn’t much of a flood to move, and no features that absolutely make me want to move. And Wired News reviewer Simon Burns agrees with me, and sees some of the same flaws in the new project that I do. His article is a more in-depth than mine, but it’s definitely worth a read. Here’s to Google Talk’s success, but they’ll have to make the service really compelling in order to get more users.

Security Now! // Episode 1

Another podcast is in town, this time hosted by Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson, of ShieldsUP and SpinRite fame, both at GRC [ http://grc.com/ ] called Security Now! and it looks good. The first episode was actually posted on August 18th and mentioned in TWIT episode 18, but I’m catching up on such things and it looks like the first one has been released and is riding on TWIT bandwidth for distribution. Download it and check it out-the first episode is only about 18 minutes, but it’s definitely a winner!

Coming Soon: Lab Rats!

Andy Walker is on the move! Between Call for Help, chatting with us [ http://www.techtvforever.net/index.php?p=208 ], and working on Ping! [ http://www.techtvforever.net/index.php?p=229 ] it looks like Andy and Sean Carruthers are working on a videocast called Lab Rats, which will begin airing on the internet in September!

Stay tuned, this is going to be another good one to add to the roundup, and we’ll be tracking even more shows than we used to, but hey-it’s all good as long as you have quality technology content, right? Right!

Coming Soon: Digital Life TV!

I didn’t know about this until Eric Craft posted it over at the TechTV-Forever messageboards [ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ ] but Patrick Norton, who’s been a writer at ExtremeTech [ http://www.extremetech.com/ ] among other things, is planning a new IPTV show called Digital Life TV, which will hopefully return our beloved Patrick to our screens as well as our airwaves.

The announcement and “coming soon” info is all right here:

Google Releases Google Talk

Again, another validation of rumors that have been running around for quite some time now-Google is getting into the instant messaging business. The word was of course that Google was planning an IM network, and it looks like that network is finally here, in the form of Google Talk:

Looks like Google Talk is riding on top of a Jabber network, so you can either download the Google Talk client (windows 2000/xp only at the moment) or you can use your favorite IM client to connect to the Google Talk network via Jabber. The only trick you miss there is the ability to do voice calls to other Google Talk users. That’s right, Google Talk includes the ability to place voice calls to other online members over their network, and while there is no Macintosh or Linux Google Talk client available from Google, they encourage you to use another one:

more information available here:

And are nice enough to include information! Google Talk works using your GMail username and password, and is available for download now. Give it a try!

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 19

Another TWIT is here and ready to go! This week’s hosts are the usual gang, Leo, Pat, Kevin, Roger, Steve, and Dvorak; no special guests this time around. Topics this week of course include the triumphant return of Call for Help to the G4 lineup, but of course go much deeper and into other areas than that: The trademarking of Linux, Google’s market moves, how the FCC defines broadband and why it’s lame, the lack of faith in Verizon FIOS, a little chat about Creative Commons, a good long talk about IPTV and it’s direction in the United States, and much much more. Looks like an excellent podcast! The TechTV Forever mirror is up and running, so download away.
