Weezy and The Swish // Episode 18

A new week brings us a brand new Weezy and The Swish! This week’s show, hosted by Louise and Laura’s doubles (stunt doubles?) as well as the originals, proves to be more than interesting-it’s like having double vision, but…with audio…and no vision. The group answers fan voicemail and chats among themselves about what it’s like to, well…be each of them. At least sometimes. I know, I’m confused too.

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 26

Another TWIT is in the can! This week the TWIT crew land again in the Gallery Cafe for the last meetup TWIT for at least another week, as everyone goes back to their regular lives. Again the video is recorded thanks to Pixel Corps [ http://pixelcorps.com/ ], and should be available over at Revision3 [ http://revision3.com/ ] in a couple of days. Your esteemed hosts this week are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, Robert Heron, Roger Chang, David Prager, with no out of the box guests this week. You know what that means: more of the tech chat that you’ve come to know and love all the while!

This week the gang chat about what it’s like to fly with the Blue Angels, the DARPA grand challenge and robotics in automobiles, the Web 2.0 conference, and Apple’s pending october 12th announcement that everyone’s convinced will be a video iPod (although there is some dissention in the TWIT ranks!), the Sun + Google office suite story that broke last week, and of course, Dvorak’s tips for impressing everyone at a party. Sounds like it’s entertaining AND educational! The TechTVForever mirror is up, so download away from either our link here or the sources in the episode notes!

Security Now! // Episode 8

This week on Security Now!, Leo and Steve take on the topic of DDoS attacks, or Distributed Denial of Service attacks (as well as DoS attacks, which are just Denial of Service attacks, same thing just not distributed) and what they mean to you as a user, how they happen, and how they’ve become significant in the technology security arena. Also, the duo discuss what those terms mean to you and how you can protect yourself much less if you should be worried at all about it. Listen now!

DiggNation // Episode 15

New DiggNation to start your week, even those of you who have the day off today. This week Kevin and Alex chat about, as usual, the most dugg stories over at the social bookmarking website, Digg.com, and this week specifically the rumors floating around that Apple will announce a video iPod on October 12th, AOL’s purchase of weblogs, inc -which means they now own popular sites like Engadget [ http://www.engadget.com/ ], the first PSP virus (more like a trojan horse), Peter Jackson to direct the Halo movie, advances in medical science to treat the bird flu by piecing together the genome of the 1918 flu that killed millions, HDTV easter eggs, and much much more, including the witty banter you’ve come to expect from Kevin and Alex, all while sipping beer. Check it out!

Windows XP SP3 Preview Leaked

If you didn’t know already, Microsoft has announced that a new service pack for Windows XP, Service Pack 3, will be released near or around the time Microsoft Windows Vista will ship, sometime next year. A preview version of the new Service Pack has already surfaced online in a few places, and apparently includes a host of network fixes, improvements for windows logon, and much much more. At first, Microsoft had said they weren’t planning a major service pack release for Windows XP, but they eventually changed their tune. The news comes from PCWorld, and it’s all below:

Hackers Fiercer Than Ever, FBI Says

Even though hackers have fallen from above-the-flap news, that doesn’t mean that technology security and information security is any less important, and that recent hack and crack attempts are any less damaing or difficult to investigate and prosecute than they ever have been before. At the same time, the FBI is just getting wind of exactly how serious the threat of hackers and computer intrusion is to the rest of the world, as they’re just starting to acknowledge that hack attempts and malware planted on people’s machines are responsible for an array of damage like identity theft, bank fraud, and more.

Even though the FBI has just recently apparently gotten wise to the events of the past several years doesn’t mean you should be in the dark about it either. If this is news to you, read on:

Microsoft Announces New Corporate Antimalware Product

Looking to satisfy both notions that most computer users have that Microsoft should take responsibility for the lack of security in the Windows operating system as well as the complaints from technology professionals and writers that Microsoft has yet to really emphasize or put a true focus on security, Microsoft has made the announcement that it will be shipping a true antimalware product that’s fully rounded to detect and protect against viruses and spyware and trojan horses in 2006 and will be in beta by the end of the year.

The product is apparently targeted at corporate environments, but I doubt that Microsoft will keep it from the public that’s very much aching for a comprehensive suite that’s built into Windows like this product reportedly will, when it’s released. Check out the news:

Is October 12th vPod Day?

Rumor has it that Apple is planning on making a significant product announcement on October 12th, and sent out invitations to movers and shakers to meet with Apple at the same theatre where the U2 iPod was released last year. AppleInsider seems to think so:

And they’re not the only one buzzing over the possibility of a vPod being released; our friend Leander over at CultOfMac.com [ http://www.cultofmac.com/ ] is pondering exactly what we’re pondering:

Apparently next wednesday”s announcement is supposed to coincide with a major overhaul of the iTunes Music Store, which is also leading people to believe video is in the works and all those hidden features we’ve been reading about in iTunes will come out in broad daylight. Only time will tell!

New Podcast: CyberWalker Mondays // Episode 1

Looks like we have a new podcast to track! Andy Walker, formerly of Call for Help fame and definitely of TechTVForever.net interview fame (thanks again Andy!) [ http://www.techtvforever.net/index.php?p=208%22 ] does a weekly radio bit on AM 640 in Toronto, on a show called The Stafford Show (locals, pay attention and listen!) where he answers live tech questions. This looks good, and he’s decided that well, as long as he does it, he may as well put it up for everyone to hear! Right now it’s called Cyberwalker Mondays, and the first episode is up and available for download. Check it out:

California Makes Phishing Illegal

California has stepped up to the plate, making phishing an actual and particular crime, allowing victims of phishing scams seek damages from those who may have scammed them or taken their personal information. The Anti-Phishing Act of 2005 garnered wide support from IT industry groups as well as consumer advocates, and was signed into law last Friday. While the law, like most of its type, will probably do very little to actually fight phishing and reduce the number of phishing attempts, it very well may serve its purpose if its held up in court and a victim is allowed to collect from the scammer that managed to collect their personal information. Command-N // Episode 17

Another Command-N is up and ready; a little late this week, but none the worse for the wear! This week’s Command-N has Amber and Mikey talking about topics from the iPod subway map scandal to the announcement that j!nx has official command-n gear! We poked Amber about it in our recent interview with her [ http://www.techtvforever.net/?p=278 ] and she mentioned that new gear was coming, and it looks like it’s finally arrived! I think I might just buy one, but I’m holding out hope for maybe a nice grey or black tee with the command symbol on it all by its lonesome. I think that’d be pretty awesome!

Anyway, I’m getting away from the point. This week the duo chat a bit more about the iPod Nano, Make magazine, podcasting tips, and of course, give us their weekly web picks. Also, since it’s Canada’s Thanksgiving this coming week (Happy Thanksgiving you guys!) they’ll be taking next week off, and will be back on the 17th of October. So this one should hold you over until then! Check it out now!

Cool Download: Explorer XP

Now this is pretty cool! It’s an add-on/exploring application that extends the abilities and efforts of Windows Explorer in a bunch of different and useful ways. PC World brings us Explorer XP, today’s awesome download, and here’s what they have to say about it:

Windows Explorer could do so much more than it does. Luckily, ExplorerXP goes the extra mile. For starters, this file manager uses tabs, making it easier to keep track of your files. ExplorerXP shows you folder size–not just file size–information, and it shows you the actual size of compressed files and folders. This program supports USB devices. It also lets you merge and split files and rename several files at once.

Looks good to me! Give it a whirl!

As for the topics this week, this week is the 15th birthday of the Electronic Frontier Foundation [ http://www.eff.org/ ] (happy birthday!), meeting DVD Jon, the Million Dollar Homepage, the ACE remixes of various films as films they most definitely weren’t, like The Shining as a romantic comedy and Titanic as a horror flick, MIT’s 100 dollar laptop, everyone loves the new Neil Gaiman flick, Mirrormask, audience questions, and much much more! Security Now! // Episode 7

This week’s Security Now! is all about spyware. Leo and Steve talk about Spyware, and Steve, who essentially invented the term Spyware, explains how he discovered spyware and what he did about it, and how the companies that thought that spyware was going to be the next big advertising platform reacted to being called “spyware.” They talk about how to protect yourself from spyware and the dangers of spyware, and gets into some of the details about what spyware does, why it’s such a huge problem, and how we got into this spyware mess in the first place.

Definitely a good listen, and in the end they reccomend some excellent tips for spyware protection and removal, as well as how to lock down your web browser. Enjoy!

DiggNation // Episode 14

This week’s DiggNation is the first podcast EVER to be recorded in full glorious Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound! I’m not entirely sure WHY they want to record in 5.1 surround, the DiggNation podcast doesn’t feature any music or anything and it’s essentially just two guys talking, so I suppose we’ll get to hear background noise in 5.1 surround. Regardless, this week’s DiggNation is a first in podcasting!

Aside from that, this week’s DiggNation features new RSS searching for Digg, the Zombie infection simulator, TechTV is NOT coming back, no matter that the peanut gallery there (and here at TechTVForever) say, that giant squid story that everyone remembers from last week, and much much more! Looks like the video is ready for subscribers, but average joes like you and I just have to wait. In the meantime, the podcast is there and waiting for you! Check it out!
