This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 37

This Week’s TWIT is all about CES, with hosts John C. Dvorak, Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Patrick Norton, and David Prager. This week the TWITs cover releases and information coming out of CES this week, including Microsoft’s preview of Windows Vista. Regardless, everyone has kind of determined that this year’s CES was kind of blah and no seriously significant news came out of it. The crew revisits the amazing Optimus Keyboard that everyone was raving about a few months back, with the OLED screens on each key-is it real? Also, some predictions on what Apple will announce at MacWorld San Francisco, and reactions to Google’s announcements this week. All this and more on This Week In Tech!

Security Now! // Episode 21

This week’s Security Now! is all about last week’s Windows MetaFile flaw, and Leo and Steve get to chat with the man responsible for patching windows before Microsoft could get around to it, Ilfak Guilanov. The two chat with him about his third party patch that dominated the internet until Microsoft showed up a few days late and a couple of dollars short with their own, and why the flaw was so serious. Now that Microsoft has published their own fix, available via Windows Update, the discussion has simmered a bit, but it’s still worth following up on. Enjoy!

CES 2006: Show-Stopping Photos From Day 3

More photos from the show floor at CES, brought to us by the staff at PC World! Now that the show is in full gear and going strong, we’re getting a look at some of the wackier and more interesting items brought out for show, some of which probably will never even make it to store shelves near you. But nevertheless, they’re definitely fun to look at, at the very least!

PC World brings us this time a company that’s selling to the gaming crowd by selling pre-modded personalized computers, the ultimate iPod dock/stereo station, a handheld lie detector, the ultimate backpack, and just the device you need to turn your old 4th gen iPod (ipod photo) into an ipod that can play video. (if you’re like me and bought your ipod photo like 3 weeks before the ipod with video came out!) Add to thast some hot new satellite radio receivers that can go anywhere you go, and even more cool gizmos, and you have PC World’s photo wrap-up from the third day at the show!

CES: Hot Products from the Second Day

PC World is back, giving us more sneak peeks and hot products now that the show has officially opened and the droves of media, geeks, and technology enthusiasts are walking the floor looking for hot items and what will hopefully be the next big trends in technology and the digital lifestyle. This year’s looking good, and the products on display are definitely hot, but we have yet to see what’ll make it to store shelves and showroom floors and what will remain pipe dreams and conceptual ideas.

Alienware’s slimline PC that looks suspiciously like an Apple iMac (haven’t we been through this before with Gateway?) , even more portable media players and devices, droves of newer, smaller, digital cameras, and new ways to store and access your music, movies, and media from anywhere are all on display. PC World has full coverage of CES and specifically the second day highlights at the links below.

Microsoft Releases a Patch for WMF Flaw

Took them long enough, but Microsoft finally pushed out a patch today to repair the Windows MetaFile flaw, and the patch even coexists peacefully with the old workaround that Steve and Leo were reccomending on Security Now! and the GRC website [ http://www.grc.com/sn/notes-020.htm ]. The new patch is available through Windows Update, of course, or direct download from TechNet:

[ Microsoft TechNet // WMF Advisory and Patch ]

Head out and grab it now, and it’d be a good idea to let your friends, loved ones, and fellow geeks and non-geeks know about it as well.

The Coolest Rooms on the Planet

I really like stories like this-the geekiest homes you can imagine, and all the tech that’s under the hood making the place so awesome. Security cameras and video displays of the folks at your door, heated and cooled floors, environmentally friendly technology, and the latest in gadgets and gear to trick out your house. I wish my place were nearly this cool, and if I keep remembering ideas like these, maybe my next place will be-if I can get around the price tag!

Take a tour through some of the coolest rooms that Wired could possibly find; a decked out living room with motorized blinds and a 660-watt Yamaha audio processor for setting the mood, a kitchen with a dishwasher that’s smart enough to use the right amount of water and soap depending on how dirty the dishes are, and a bedroom with a 30-inch LCD television that rises from the bed’s footboard!

CES: The First 24 Hours

The insiders at PC World have already managed to sneak their way into CES long before the show opens (officially on Thursday) and have wandered around to get some exclusive pictures and highlights from some of the gadgets we’ll be seeing on the display floor this year. Some of these guys look pretty cool, others….not so much. Regardless, if this is any indication, we’ll be seeing a lot of cool stuff on the showroom floor at CES 2006.

From Hello Kitty Guitars to compact media players that might give the iPod a run for it’s money, all the way to USB flash drives that use electronic paper technology, even these first few photos have me licking my chops to see what’s next. Stay posted, as more information comes along, we’ll share it with you. As for what we have now; link is below the jump.

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 36

The first TWIT of the new year! This week’s hosts are Robert Heron, John C. Dvorak, Leo Laporte, Alex Lindsay, and Kenji Kato, and the discussion is off to a glorious start.

Everyone is getting geared up for CES (the Consumer Electronics Show), and the crew chat a little about science fiction becoming science fact. The crew wonders if Apple will use Intel branding on its systems, and Intel drops the “Intel Inside” marketing slogan and is replacing the term “pentium” with “core.” Interesting. The crew talk about how both the White House and the NSA public websites violate federal guidelines and use tracking cookies.

Also in the bad news department, Symantec has flaws in 62 of their products, and the fact that the Windows Metafile Flaw still goes unpatched by Microsoft is no consolation. The group discuss the pending Intel Macintoshes, and wonder whether or not those systems will run windows seamlessly, and what that means for the business of porting software from Windows to Mac (and whether anyone will continue doing it at all). Seagate buys Maxtor, Sony settles it’s class-action suit over the rootkit DRM, and much much more! Enjoy!

Security Now! // Special Edition: WMF Vulnerability Update

Like any good technology security show, Security Now! is out of the gate and all over a new windows vulnerability, doing overtime to make sure we’re well informed and well prepared to deal with a gaping hole in all versions of Microsoft Windows that several websites are already trying to exploit. It[‘s a super short special edition, but it’s definitely a must-hear, so Windows 2000 and Windows XP users can snag the fix for the vulnerability that’s out on the net from a gracious third party-Microsoft has yet to produce a patch.
