Security Now! // Episode 23

Steve and Leo wrap up their discussion on the Windows MetaFile flaw, and Steve is sticking to his guns that it was a deliberate backdoor built into Windows. He’s written an application that can test for the vulnerability in all versions of windows to see if it’s exploitable, and claims that older versions of Windows aren’t quite as vulnerable as newer versions. Head on over for the last word from the Security Now! crew on this topic.

Weezy and The Swish // Episode 31 and 32

Yikes! I missed a Weezy and the Swish! I guess all the CES events and Macworld stuff from last week just encompassed everything and I totally forgot! Well, no worries, I’ll recap last week’s and give you this week’s all in one!

Last week’s episode found Weezy and Laura with Kyle Cease and Ben Gleib, which leads to absolute pandemonium that carries you through the entire podcast; definitely not safe for work (are they ever), it’s right here:

DiggNation // Episode 29

This week on DiggNation are several really hot topics that managed to make their way to the most-dugg stories list this week over at Digg.com; including Kevin Rose getting info from his anonymous source what some of the biggest announcements at Steve Jobs’ keynote speech over 24 hours prior to the announcements themselves-that was a real scoop. A first look at the new TiVO Series 3, Nikson deciding to stop producing all analog cameras (meaning any camera that takes actual film), Google Pack fails to impress, as does the new Google video store, among other things. Download and enjoy!

Infected by Martin Sargent // Episode 4

The newest Infected with Martin Sargent is up and ready for consumption, and to be perfectly honest, I couldn’t exerpt this if you asked me to, it’s just too hilarious:

So here’s the thing: doing a podcast with Joey and The Gator is like doing a podcast with a filthy Keebler Elf who got thrown out of the tree for trying to hack the magic oven and a sexually predacious, hard-drinking version of Babe Winkleman. Essentially, it’s a recipe for not being able to get all three of us together in the same room, at the same time, to press the red button (excuse continued at SargeWorld.com). In the meantime, here’s an interesting interview my new Hollywood friend Orlando Bloom did with my old patron Michael Caine about the future of podcasting.

And there you have it. Enjoy!

Security Now! // Episode 22

Leo and Steve are back on the mic this week, wrapping up discussion of the Windows MetaFile flaw and it’s various fixes, including Steve’s amazing supposition that the metafile flaw is not so much a flaw but a backdoor, left deliberately into Windows for some reason or another or some functionality or another. What that functionality is, and whether it’s supposedly nefarious or not is a whole other story, but I don’t think that’s what they’re getting at. What are they getting at? Download the show to find out!

Half a Million Downloads for Lab Rats!

Andy Walker posted to the TechTV Forever yahoogroup [ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/techtv-forever/ ] that they’ve just logged their 500,000’s download of Lab Rats episodes, in part due to their ongoing and up to the second coverage of both the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the MacWorld Expo! He says:

Just wanted to thank everyone for their ongoing support of LabRats.tv

I am delighted to tell you we logged our 500,000th download last night. Half
a million! Sean and I are just astounded!
And 100,000 of those downloads came in the last week from our road coverage
of CES in Las Vegas and Macworld in San Fran.
(I write to you now via Wi-Fi in my hotel lobby.)

Eric suggested that viewers probably wouldn’t mind a little advertising to
help defray costs of the production — and I agree — so we’re looking at
some fun ways of integrating that.

It’s certainly been a learning experience for us. Sean is cutting the show
on his G4 iBook and then uploading wherever we can find Wi-Fi.
Our servers ran out of space this week so we had to drop the various
versions we usually post to fit all the coverage.
But we’ll remedy that next week when we move to a new dedicated server that
will house all the Cyberwalker.com properties as well as LabRats.tv.

And if you haven’t already check out today’s episode of our Macworld
coverage, please do (11.2)…Amber, Patrick, and camera guru Mikkel Aaland
all appear on the show.

You heard the man! Look forward to new and better coverage coming soon from the Lab Rats crew, and don’t forget to check out their most recent episodes from CES and MacWorld (linked below) over at LabRats.tv [ http://www.labrats.tv/ ]

Play Windows Media files in Quicktime

It’s about damned time, too! I’ve been wanting a way to play wmv files and avi files on the macintosh for years now, and it looks like there’s finally a way to do it. A company called Flip4Mac offers the Quicktime components that allow for this, and combined with Microsoft, the two of them have delivered a powerful plugin for Quicktime that makes Windows Media a much more valid authoring and media delivery platform for the Macintosh as well as the PC. The plugin even allows for high definition media! The download is free, and available now; check it out:

Apple introduces Intel Powered iMac, MacBook Pro, iPod Accessories, ’06 Versions of iLife and iWork

You could have cut the tension with a knife at MacWorld yesterday, when the reporters and fans filed in to see Steve Jobs give the keynote speech, and Steve wasn’t one to dissapoint. Starting off the day by unveiling a new wired remote for the iPod with video that includes an fm tuner (now the folks that have been all uptight about the iPod not having one can’t complain, but similarly it’ll retail for 49 dollars and not come with your new iPod) and unveiled more television shows that will be available through the iTunes video store.

Moving on to the Macintosh, everyone had all but expected Apple to make the Mac Mini the first intel-powered Macintosh, as was promised last year, but Steve has other things in store. After unveiling the 2006 versions of iLife and iWork, as well as Mac OS 10.4.4, which is immediately available and runs natively on intel platforms, Steve presented us with an all new iMac that hides a pair of intel processors under the hood, called the Intel Core Duo. But no sooner than he unveiled the iMac did he unveil the next Apple portable, called the MacBook Pro, which is destined to replace the Powerbook altogether and also runs a set of Intel Core Duos under the hood. The Intel Core Duo is based on Pentium M technology, which makes them run cool and run fast.

(more on that here: [ http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,124243,00.asp ] )

The MacBooks are shipping in February, and the new intel iMacs are shipping immediately. More information on Apple’s announcement and the new lineup is here:
