TWiT, Command-N, and Hak.5 Fundraiser for the EFF!

twit comic

A few weeks ago, in an Adventures of Superman comic (#648, March ’06, to be precise), there was a panel where the artist obviously appreciated podcasting and tech programming, because in one of the scenes you can see some kids looting a store in a ravaged part of Metropolis wearing a TWIT jacket, a Command-N hoodie, and a Hak.5 hat (Hak.5 is another technology videocast that’s available over at their website. [ http://www.hak5.org/ ]

Well, the stars of all of the shows are helping raise money for the Electronic Frontier Foundation by autographing a copy of the comic that their logos appear in and placing it on eBay! Go ahead and place your bid today, the item’s right here:

New Show :: CrankyGeeks!

crankygeeks logo

The folks over at Ziff Davis, who bring us the fine DL.TV, are premiering a pilot for a new show called CrankyGeeks, starring who else but John C. Dvorak and a panel of other geeks, discussing the tech news and events of the day. The pilot is up for download right now, but I wonder if this won’t fall the way of Triangulation, Dvorak and Laporte’s ill-fated podcast that only got maybe one or two episodes off the ground before it vanished. Between this and Dvorak’s controverial nature, I wonder if this show will stall out, or if tons of people will tune in just to hear what he has to say. You decide for yourself and head over to check out the pilot!

This week on Security Now, Leo and Steve bring us back to the “how the internet works” set of podcasts by discussing ethernet security, or rather, the insecurity of standard ethernet and what that lack of built-in security to by and large the architecture that runs the internet today means for all os uf. Also, Steve and Leo hit high-level network security topics like ARP poisoning and exploitation, as well as how easy it is to attack systems on the same set of networks due to the way ethernet manages traffic.

Cool Download :: SiteAdvisor for Firefox and Internet Explorer

siteadvisor logo

In the tradition of getting back to more content than just podcast tracking, we’re going to kick things off by giving you an excellent plugin for both Firefox and Internet Explorer that will help keep you and your data safe on the Internet.

The SiteAdvisor plugin lets users know whether they’re looking at an unseemly or suspected fake website by way of a red “X” in the bottom of the browser window, and sniffs around sites to see if the site is obviously an attempt at phishing, the process of pretending to be a reputable source like Paypal or an online bank in attempt to obtain your personal data or passwords. SiteAdvisor retains data about a large number of websites in an attempt to be able to warn you if you happen to run across a bad site, and even ranks websites that appear in your Google, Yahoo, or MSN search results.

All this, and did we mention that the interface is simple and easy to use, and it’s completely free? Head on over and check it out, and of course, let us know what you think!

The Province Interviews Andy Walker!

The Province, part of the Canada.com network, recently interviewed Andy Walker about the eventual expansion of hacking attacks and malicious code from the desktop PC to PDAs, cellphones, and even other handheld devices like portable music players like Apple’s iPod. Andy explains that something of a “perfect storm” is brewing in the IT security world, where malicious hackers are learning more and more to target a wider swath of technology devices, from the up-to-recently considered mostly safe Apple Macintosh computer to, eventually, cellphones, PDAs, and Blackberrys that also carry information and data that could be very valuable to attackers.

He points out that the future might not even be so malicious; that downloading content to your portable music or video player might give way to you recieving spam or adware, and that specifically Apple should be more careful when it comes to security, focusing mostly on the ubiquitousness of the iPod as a portable digital device that could be targeted.

What do you think? Is Andy on point about future security risks or is he way off base and barking up the wrong tree? Let us know in the comments!

Weezy and The Swish // Episode 38

This week’s Weezy and The Swish features special guest, comedian Earl Skakel, sitting in with Laura, Weezy, and Matt sitting around and chatting about all manner of topic. Seriously, I’m impressed with how much they can fit into one show. In case we haven’t mentioned yet though, there’s a new in-page dedicated audio player, and the videos of the show are immediately posted to YouTube and then playable through the website! How cool is that? Because of that we won’t direct-link the mp3 anymore-you should head to the site and check these goodies out! This week’s show is about curling, dumpsters, other sports, and perhaps some vague relation between them all. Even if there isn’t, it’s still awesome. Click and enjoy!
